What is Johnson Screen?

  • Johnson screen is a metal filter element made of stainless steel, which is widely used in various industrial filter systems. With high compressive strength, corrosion resistance, high temperature resistance, not easy to block, easy to clean and other characteristics, it has become the most popular filter product for users. 
  • Johnson screen products are mainly composed of three parts: profile wire, support rods and stainless steel connectors of different styles. 
  • The biggest feature of Johnson screen products is that they are not easy to block and are easy to clean. With this feature, they are widely used in high-viscosity filtration environments.  
  • The profile wire is spirally welded on the support rod, and the entire filter element is a fully welded structure, making it more solid. The profile wire are V-shaped or T-shaped. This structure makes the filter element surface and impurities only contact at two points, “narrow inside and wide outside”, so that the filter element is not easy to be blocked, and backwashing becomes easier.
  • There are two filtration directions of the filter element. The smooth surface of the profile wire is the direction of the material inlet, which is divided into FITO and FOTI.
  • There are two main types of Johnson screen filter products according to different use environments. The positive roll has the profile wire outside and the support rod inside, while the reverse roll is the opposite, with the profile wire inside and the support rod outside.
  • Different from the wire mesh filter element, the Johnson screen filter is a fully welded structure, which is more durable.

Johnson screen profile

The wedge wire screen is welded by two parts, namely: the profile wire and the support rod. Johnson screen wire as raw material, Bluslot can provide two types of wedge wire custom service: “SB” and “SBB”. These two different wedge wires can be applied to different products.

SB Profile wire

SB type is the most common type of wedge wire, its advantages are low cost and low resistance to the material.

  • It can be seen that if calculated according to the equation, the flow rate and the pressure drop are proportional to the filter area. 
  • And there is a certain proportional relationship. Therefore, as long as the parameters in the equation are fixed, the flow rate can be calculated.

The opening area of the Johnson screen filter product is a very important technical parameter.
Infiltration equipment, the size of the flow affects the efficiency and cost control of the entire filtration system.
Johnson screen filter products have a continuous slotted structure, which has a larger filter area than other types of metal filter elements.

How does Johnson screen work?

As shown in the figure, the Johnson screen filter is mainly composed of two parts: The profile wire and the support rod, which are welded together by the annular fusion welding process, form a stainless steel filter element with a continuous slot structure.
The Johnson screen filter element and the stainless steel sintered metal filter element are the same as the surface filter element, and the impurities larger than the gap size are blocked by the outer surface of the filter element.
Wedge wedge wire filter elements are often used in more complex working environments to overcome difficult filtration applications. For example, the filtration of high-viscosity materials, the filtration process that is easy to block, etc., so the backwashing process of the Johnson screen filter is also an important part.
Here we introduce the working principle of the Johnson screen filter element through the most common structure.
The Johnson screen filter element is installed in the filter or pipe, and the material is pulled by power and flows into the filter element from the outside to the inside.
Assuming that the slot size of the filter element is 20 microns, solid particles larger than 20 microns will be blocked by the surface of the filter element.
Of course, due to the power transmission, it cannot block 100% of solid particles larger than 20 microns, but it can block most of the particles larger than the gap size.
The material is purified, protecting downstream expensive equipment from contamination of the entire system by impurities.
With the continuous increase of working time, the Johnson screen gradually accumulates dirt and impurities in the material to form a filter impurity layer. The impurity layer is accumulated on the inner side of the filter screen, so a pressure difference is formed between the inner and outer sides of the filter screen.  
When the pressure difference of the filter reaches the preset value, the automatic cleaning process will start. During this time, the supply of clean water will continue to flow, the cleaning valve will be opened, and the water pressure in the cleaning chamber and the suction device will drop significantly. Through the pressure difference between the Johnson screen filter cartridge and the sewage suction pipe, a suction force is generated between the sewage suction pipe and the cleaning chamber through the suction nozzle, forming a sewage suction process.
At the same time, the electric motor drives the sewage suction pipe to make a spiral motion in the axial direction. The combination of the axial movement and the rotational movement of the dust collector completely cleans the inner surface of the entire filter screen. The entire flushing process takes only tens of seconds.
The drain valve closes at the end of the cleaning. The filter begins to prepare for the next flush cycle. 
When used in a complex environment, if the Johnson screen is deformed due to pressure and the gap becomes larger, it must be replaced at this time, which increases the maintenance cost in the later period, so it is very important to choose a product with high welding strength. The annular fusion welding process independently developed by Bluslot perfectly solves this problem, and the surface wire and the support rod are firmly welded together.
